From 6 levels to 9 – An innovation in the BOOKR Class leveling system https://bookrclass.com/blog/from-6-levels-to-9/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 14:05:57 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=10136 Leveling Up: Maximizing Student Achievement with 9 Levels in BOOKR Class
Welcome to an exciting new chapter in the world of English language education with BOOKR Class! Over the past years, we have embarked on a journey of discovery, learning from the experiences of our users, and gaining valuable insights into effective teaching practices. Today, we are thrilled to share with you a significant development that will revolutionize the way we approach language learning: the introduction of 9 levels in the BOOKR Class Library instead of 6. ]]>

With the introduction of these additional levels, our educational team aims to bring a new level of nuance and depth to the BOOKR Class Library, creating a more tailored and comprehensive learning journey for each and every student.

So, why the switch to 9 levels, and how will it benefit you as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher? Let’s delve into the advantages and possibilities that this expansion brings to the classroom.

Change, based on your feedback

During the past 2 years since BOOKR Class 2.0 came out, we have learnt and experienced a lot about the functioning of the library, the habits of our users and the teaching practices.

change based feedback

To better nuance the BOOKR Class Library, our educational team decided to extend the currently available 6 levels to 9 levels, introducing new “transition levels”.

Target & CEFR levels remain the same

The target age group will remain 4-14, and the proficiency level from pre-beginner to intermediate (pre-A1 to B2), but with more nuance and transition between levels.

The benefits of 9 levels

Why switch to 9 levels and how does it benefit your work as an EFL teacher?

 • 1. Increased Differentiation

With 9 levels instead of 6, teachers can provide a more nuanced and differentiated learning experience for their students. Different students have different levels of proficiency and progress at different rates, so having more levels allows teachers to better tailor the content to each student’s needs and abilities.

 • 2. Enhanced Language Development

By increasing the levels, the content can cover a wider range of language skills, such as vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. This can help students develop their English language skills in a more comprehensive and structured manner, building a solid foundation for their language development.

the benefits of 9 levels
 • 3. Flexibility in Lesson Planning

More levels provide teachers with greater flexibility in lesson planning. They can easily adjust the content and difficulty level based on their students’ progress and needs, allowing for a more adaptive and personalized approach to English language instruction.

 • 4. Better Assessment and Monitoring

Having more levels allows for more accurate assessment and monitoring of students’ progress. Teachers can easily track students’ performance across different levels, identify areas for improvement, and provide targeted feedback, which can support effective assessment and monitoring of student learning outcomes.

Celebrating Pride Month with New Stories and Kahoot Quizzes https://bookrclass.com/blog/pride-month-stories-with-kahoot/ Mon, 13 Jun 2022 07:08:41 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=8029

Both BOOKR Kids and Kahoot! feel strongly about the age-appropriate, easy to comprehend education of children regarding being true to their feelings, their thoughts, and their identity. Also, the importance of teaching students to accept themselves and others just the way they are, not only tolerating but loving differences.

Teachers and families can enjoy this joint program by accessing free books and activities on both educational platforms. Resources created specifically for Pride Month by Kahoot! and BOOKR Kids will be featured on the Pride page of Kahoot! and Drops, as well as in the BOOKR Class English learning application.

Kahoot! created two special learning sessions to facilitate the understanding of the topic, and BOOKR Class is set to publish five books throughout June, two of which are already available in the app, free of charge. If you are interested, take a look by downloading the app.

Two books are already available in the app: Ferret’s Scarf and Bunnybear

One of the books that users can already find in the library app is Ferret’s Scarf.

celebratin pride month

“I don’t care. I love it.” – said Ferret.

Such simple words, yet there is so much power to them.

Ferret’s Scarf is an amazing story to start a discussion about self-expression with little ones. Children need to learn from a young age that being a little different, or adoring something that others might not like as much as they do, is all okay. This understanding will break them free from seeking confirmation from the outside world and give them the confidence to express who they are.

A lighthearted tone with an uplifting, powerful message to take away is the best way to describe the story of Bunnybear in a nutshell. This title – published by Albert Whitman – caught the attention of many industry experts, as it – using the words of Publishers Weekly – has important things to say about identity and acceptance and is valuable both as entertainment and a conversation-starter.

Test your knowledge about Ferret’s Scarf with Kahoot!

bunnybear in pride month

Even though Bunnybear was born a bear, he feels like a bunny. He likes bouncing in the thicket, and in his heart, he’s fluffy and tiny, like a rabbit, instead of burly and loud, like a bear. The other bears don’t understand him as he acts like a bunny, and neither do the bunnies because he looks like a bear. Fortunately, a true friend might just make him feel good about it all.

Test your knowledge about Bunnybear with Kahoot!

“You just look one way on the outside and feel another way on the inside. That’s okay.” Knowing that it’s okay made Bunnybear’s ‘heart bounce with joy, made him feel like he belongs’. No child should be made to feel otherwise.

Bunnybear is a genuinely moving story about what it might feel like to be transgender, about identity, acceptance, friendship, and, more importantly, celebrating diversity.

Later this month, as part of the Pride Month campaign, another three books will premiere, so stay tuned, they’re coming soon:

A lovely story called Our Future discovers the topic of non-conventional life paths with an LGBTQ couple in the spotlight. The Story of Caenis reveals some exciting details of Greek mythology and the third title teaches students about the history of the rainbow flag and can be found as Rainbow People in the BOOKR Class Library application.

We promise that Bob’s adventures will not end here, another ten episodes are coming soon. Who knows, they might grow up and go to school by then.

Form-focused Texts for the Youngest Learners

In the BOOKR Class English Library you will find form-focused as well as meaning-focused texts. What is the difference?

Form-focused texts are written by language teachers with the intention to present a chosen language structure, type of expression, verb tense or grammatical structure. In these texts, the language focus is easy to identify as there are many examples and they can appear to be language patterns for the reader. This helps comprehension, understanding the use of the given structure and also facilitates acquisition thanks to repetition and its presence in various sentences.

Contrary to our meaning-focused stories, form-focused ones are usually written with a specific topic or vocabulary that best presents the grammatical structure in use. A great example is the present simple with daily routine or days of the week.

In other cases, we rely more on the topic of the book, however as they are also created to teach a chosen vocabulary set, they also fall into the category of form-focused materials.

A variety of stories help the young learners become familiar with different grammar topics or lexis. Discover some of our newest form-focused titles:

Our favourite

Roboto has a very long week. He is also very busy! He’s busy on Monday, on Tuesday, on Wednesday… But what does he do every day?

Roboto talks about his very simple activities during the week and students remember them easily thanks to the use of repetition. His sentences are in the present simple, accompanied by the days of the week as the vocabulary focus.

Stories from the Present

Although stories are magic carpets that can fly us anywhere anytime, we also believe that sometimes it’s good to talk about our current situation and even call a spade a spade.

english stories form the present

2020 was a little bit different for everyone because of lockdowns. What did the people watch? What did they read? Sam Bubbles conducts mini interviews to find out.

The whole group and their teacher have come down with a bad illness. They cough, sneeze and some of them have fever too. Of course they stay at home so they cannot meet in person. What can they do instead? Well, the teacher has a great idea: she organises an online party for her students.

Nowadays it is more and more popular to socialise online, and some people hope to find the love of their lives there. What is it like to meet someone in person for the first time? Would the students feel excited, nervous or embarrassed?

New Series

Catching a learner’s attention is an important objective when using storytelling in language teaching. Series tend to engage little ones more than a one episode story they allow more depth to the he characters, give space for growth and change. It’s exciting for students to see some of the same ‘faces’ again when learning with BOOKR Class, so don’t be afraid to exploit these English books by creating projects or group work around them. Learn more about some of the new additions to our series category and let your imagination run wild.

The Tube Detectives

Sherlyn and Johnny are teenagers in London and they get into adventures, mostly on The Tube. Hence their name, The Tube Detectives. They solve several problems with the help of their smartphones, GPS and other IT services, programs and devices. Do you know your gadgets well? If you’re interested in more, join Johnny.

The Evaluation

The Education Alliance Finland evaluation process

EAF’s standard offers an academically sound approach to evaluating the strengths and development areas of a product through the assessment of three focus areas: learning goals, pedagogical approach, and usability. An analysis using a contrary pair criterion determines how well the product supports learning of different skills.

The evaluator uses contrary pairs to diagnose skill-specifically the pedagogical approach which the product represents. The diagnosis is conducted by setting a slider in a position that describes the product’s approach between contrary pairs.

The Evaluator uses the same slider to describe the best possible approach and gives a rate (0-100) on how adequate an approach the product offers. All diagnoses and ratings are carried out by two separate expert-evaluators. Skills are diagnosed through the criterion, evaluators discuss and form a concluding diagnosis from two separate evaluations.

The rating highlights the strengths and development areas, mirroring them with the educational needs and product development opportunities. After highlighting development areas, the analysis collates suggestions on how to improve the product.

BOOKR Class Results

education alliance finland rating scale

According to the EAF report, BOOKR Class also has great strength in its multimodal approach since “all animations, sounds and small activities support reading and the understanding of the stories. Well-being is more than just feeling well. It’s a state of happiness, health and prosperity that one can improve through education. Teaching students stress management tools like meditation will result in healthier young adults who are better able to handle conflicts without losing control; they’ll also learn how social connections affect them emotionally while understanding that there needs to be balance between all three aspects: physical, emotional and environmental well-being.

 • Work Life Skills and Entrepreneurship

In today’s changing world, good work life skills are more important than ever. These abilities cover core knowledge, understanding instructions and teamwork in order for a future employee or entrepreneur to be successful at what they do. Key factors that contribute positively towards this success include a willingness to take action, persistence and teamwork. A successful entrepreneur knows how to think outside the box and nurture talents.

Learning and Innovation

Innovation is all about finding new and better ways of doing things. People have been innovating since ancient times, but it’s becoming more common in recent decades as technology has advanced and people are constantly finding new ways to use tech to make their lives easier or better.

learning and innovation by bookrclass
 • Cognitive and Thinking Skills

Cognitive and thinking skills are mental activities, such as perception, understanding, memorising, reasoning, justifying and questioning. These skills are quintessential from our earliest years of understanding ourselves and the world to interpreting intentions and growing into professionals in our field. These are the skills needed to process information and to work with gained knowledge; in other words, the basis of learning, critical thinking and decision making.

 • Creativity and Innovation

Over recent decades, creativity has gained more and more importance in our everyday lives not only in arts and sciences, but also in personal growth. Creativity helps people express themselves in their own ways, produce something new and a different activity, and a goal to pursue. A creative individual typically displays originality, imagination, and expressiveness.

Innovation is the execution of a new idea or work. It enables us to put our creativity into practice and reach the goal. Creativity together with innovation bring positive change into our lives, our community and the environment.

 • Learning to Learn

Learning to learn is the skill for independent growth and improvement, managing one’s own learning process, and the ability to persist. Having this awareness and perseverance as an individual or as a member of a group is an indicator of work ethic, ambitions and motivation for self-improvement. Despite the complexity of the skill, we start to develop it at a very early stage when we try to reach set goals at school by managing time wisely, finding the best strategies or learning techniques and reflecting on ourselves as learners with preferences.

 • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Critical thinking and problem-solving is a way of thinking which facilitates the consideration and testing of ideas for a better understanding and outcome. The expression ‘critical thinking’ might trigger a negative connotation but the aim is undoubtedly to give constructive feedback and to lead to effective problem solving. By questioning decisions and evaluating opinions using these two skills we might end up improving living conditions and even protecting our environment.

Information & Technology

As teachers of today’s generation you hold the power to shape tomorrow’s world by helping learners develop into responsible citizens equipped with the knowledge and skills needed when faced against new challenges. Infusing technology into the classroom can help them learn this using more engaging digital devices like tablets or laptops.

information and technology by bookrclass

Educators might feel intimidated by introducing new technologies; they think “I’m not an expert.” But you don’t need much technical knowledge – your expertise comes in knowing how to make sure children learn best by using the right innovative tools together (and responsibly).

 • ICT Literacy

Teaching learners to be critical thinkers when using information and communication technologies (ICT), not only for schoolwork but also personal interests outside of class hours is also highly important. Maintaining digital citizenship requires understanding cybersecurity threats as well as ethical practices such as online shopping without becoming victims of fraud.

 • Media and Information Literacy

Information and media literacy is the ability to critically analyse information sources, make informed decisions when dealing with different types of media messages – be they on social networks or traditional news programs. Our goal is to promote an awareness of media influence and create an active stance towards both consuming as well as creating media content.

 • Multimodal Literacy

We speak about multimodal texts when the meaning is communicated through combinations of two or more modes, for example written language, spoken language, and patterns of meaning that are visual, audio, gestural, or tactile. Multimodal texts can be analog like textbooks, picture books, comics, posters, or digital like film, animation, digital stories or web pages.

Multimodal texts can also be live, like oral storytelling or dance, as they convey meaning through combinations of modes such as gestural, spatial, spoken language, and audio.

As communication practices have become increasingly shaped by developments in information and multimedia technologies, literacy is no longer just about how well we read and write. It also includes comprehension skills for understanding different forms of text from diverse sources which may have many meanings at once.

The evaluation process of EAF is very complex and thorough, so earning EAF Certification is a huge honour reflecting the highest levels of pedagogy and technology excellence.

Lexile Measures Help Teachers Use BOOKR Class to Match Students with Books https://bookrclass.com/blog/lexile-measures/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 14:24:38 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=4814

Beginning on the 1st of July, BOOKR Class implemented a new Lexile tool to help teachers identify students’ reading levels, so that they can assign the best books for them – narrowing options without limiting choices.

What is Lexile?

Lexile was developed by MetaMetrics®, an educational assessment and research company in Durham, North Carolina. The initial research for Lexiles was funded by the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The company identified a significant difference in how traditional readability formulas assess text difficulty compared to how words are actually read and comprehended by children at different ages and stages of development.

More than just scores, Lexile measures are a tool for educators to help personalise instruction and an easy-to-understand measure that can be discussed with parents and other stakeholders. The Lexile Framework places both the student and texts on the same developmental scale to match the learner with appropriate reading resources at each student’s ability level.

Lexiles represent what readers can comprehend based on their actual reading abilities rather than on arbitrary judgments about their grade-level or age. Lexile measures are not predicted probabilities of future reading performance, nor should they be viewed as limitations on what readers can learn.

how to find lexile books

Lexiles are always shown as a number followed by the letter “L.”The Lexile Frameworkis a developmental scale ranging from beginning learner measures below 0L (at most BR 400L) to above 1600L for advanced abilities. The higher the learner’s Lexile measure, the greater their ability to read and comprehend text in English.

If the student’s measure or level (we recommend not to use the word ‘score’, so students get motivated to level up) is 150L, it means that the student is possibly capable of reading and understanding a text with a 150L measure. It doesn’t mean that the student will only be able to understand texts marked with 150L though. The Lexile measures shown for titles are approximations that reflect typical Lexile levels of students who will enjoy them most.

Lexile Measurement in BOOKR Class

The BOOKR Class Library app is aligned with the Lexile Framework for Reading. In order to determine a student’s Lexile Measure, BOOKR Class app now features a free Lexile test for students as a placement test.

Upon first opening the library app, students have the option to fill out this Lexile assessment consisting of 30 short tasks that depict their level of English proficiency. Based on their score, the app will allocate them a corresponding BOOKR level. You can also find a note of the level in the Teacher’s Dashboard so you can use it as a guide for further assignments.

free lexile test

Placement test results are one of the factors that determine the book recommendations in the Library ( alongside interests and assigned books by the teachers) . Educators can also use Lexile® as a way to measure student progress because Lexile leveling gives an objective measure that can be repeated any time in the app.

Lexile Assessment is also a great tool for differentiation, as you can assign books with similar topics and vocabulary at different levels – a huge support for educators.

How to Find the Right Books for Students

We all know it is not always easy to find reading materials for students (especially language learners) that provide sufficient challenge to advance their reading skill development, but are also not so difficult that they discourage reading.

Starting with a student’s Lexile measure is a great tool for finding the Lexile of the book and forecasting the comprehension rate – see the example below –

lexile measures

Lexile measures provide a scientific approach for matching students with ability-appropriate texts.

When a student measure and a book measure are the same, the match is estimated to be ideal for the learner. The target range that is suggested for a learner is 100L below the student measure and 50L above, so learners with 500L would probably be able to comprehend and enjoy a book measured between 400L and 550L.

read on your lexile level

If the Lexile measure of the student is much higher than that of the book, this might suggest that it will be too difficult for the learner. If the Lexile measure is much lower than that of the book, it might not help them further develop their reading ability or get bored while reading it.

Choosing the right BOOKR Class books my Lexile Measures

If you’re wondering how to find the Lexile level of a book, it’s a straightforward process in the BOOKR Class Library app. You can easily discover a book’s measure by navigating to the Books tab, where you have the option to filter and order the books by Lexile Measure.

This feature allows you to efficiently select books that align with your students’ individual Lexile Measures and assign them directly to the appropriate students.

By tailoring the reading materials to their specific levels, you can effectively support their reading skill development and ensure they are presented with engaging and suitable content.

What Lexile scores do the BOOKR Class levels correspond with?

The benefits of this system are numerous and include the ability to provide an accurate assessment based on what readers comprehend rather than relying on arbitrary judgments about grade-level or age. If you want your learners to have better access to quality materials at appropriate reading levels but don’t know where to start, contact us! We’ll be happy to walk you through how our app works and show you why using Lexiles makes it easier for educators like yourself.

Welcome to the new age: BOOKR Class 2.0 https://bookrclass.com/blog/bookr-class-2-0/ Thu, 01 Jul 2021 09:42:12 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=3576

BOOKR Class is coming out with a brand new visual representation and feature set that contains these early years of experimenting and observing. Plus the valuable experience of our users who have helped us improve our product every step of the way. However, I am getting ahead of myself. You can’t get a picture of where we’re heading unless you know where it all came from. Let us take you away and travel back to 2015 just for a second with us – to when it all began.

Our company, BOOKR Kids was founded in 2015 with the mission of making reading a habit in every child’s life. Reading and storytelling is becoming underrated in our lives and the literacy capabilities of more than 50% of adults are now no better than computers.

We believe that through reading many skills are developed that are necessary to lead a successful and fulfilling life such as reading comprehension, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, cognitive, social and emotional capabilities.

Storytelling is common throughout all eras, cultures and backgrounds – it is a shared experience. Everyone can relate to stories, especially children.

Narratives are engaging, and can catch and hold attention, are immersive and memorable. Whether through books, pictures, music, multimedia, or the spoken word – storytelling is a crucial part of early childhood education and beyond.

Even though we started as a digital publishing company, following research in 2018 we realized that we could dedicate this unique know-how we developed to education. The research showed that our interactive e-book format is capable of raising and holding attention long term, and those who were reading with the digital books even performed 20% better on the reading comprehension tests compared to learners who were reading printed books.

How about using this knowledge not only to improve reading skills, but to help children learn a second language? So a new product was born – called BOOKR Class – with books and games in English that children enjoy while English teachers are able to monitor their performance.

In the past 5 years our team has grown from 3 to 40 employees and today consists of international children literature experts, psychologists, ESL teachers, editors, writers, illustrators, animators, developers, and so on.

Many things have changed around BOOKR Class, and our ESL/EFL app but the main pillars will always stay the same: storytelling, high quality and a mission-driven team.

So what is new then? – you might ask. Let’s go through some of the major innovations that users have never seen before.

We have doubled the number of books and games

We cherish quality over quantity: all our books are meticulously created by our team of English teachers, psychologists, illustrators and animators. We always choose to give the best quality and experience to users rather than have low quality books in the system to boost the numbers.

However, for this launch we have worked twice as hard to provide 1000+ content to our youngest readers – more than 300 exciting new stories that will captivate students.

Lexile® Framework: Find your students' level with an objective measurement method

A placement test is crucial to know which level is best for your child or student – if it’s too easy, they might get bored or not improve much, and on the other hand if the level of a book/exercise is too high, they can easily become discouraged.

What is a Lexile placement test?

When students first log in to the all, they can complete a test that depicts their level of English proficiency. Based on their score the app will place them to a corresponding BOOKR level.

The placement test results are one of the factors that determine the book recommendations in the Library ( alongside interests and assigned books by the teachers) . Educators can also use Lexile® scores as a way to measure student progress. Lexile leveling gives an objective measure, where you can see the difference among your students.

It is a great tool for differentiation, as you can assign books with similar topics and vocabulary at different levels – a huge support for educators.

Gamification is the name of the game: motivating with coins and badges

We are dedicated to helping teachers give that extra nudge to students to practice as much as possible and work on implementing gamification techniques into our Library App. Gamification is the use of game elements in applications that are not games. Our user experience experts have borrowed elements from games, such as coins and badges to motivate users by giving them small awards for their achievements – in our case, achievement is when a child finishes reading a book.

There is one area that is a challenging one when it comes to learning a new language: pronunciation. As an exciting new feature, all the learning cards are supplemented with voice recognition so that the kids practice the pronunciation and receive instant feedback.

The most wanted: an even more easy-to-use Teacher’s Dashboard

The Teacher’s Dashboard assists teachers in preparation, time optimization and differentiation with real-time reading statistics and book assignment. Via this platform teachers can track overall engagement, reading habits, assignment completion, level progression and language skill development.

Therefore they can understand their students’ performance and differentiate. In the new version, there is an even more detailed search engine and the opportunity to register all of your students with just one click that will save teachers even more time with administrative tasks and class preparation.

They can then spend more time doing what they are best at – educating the next generation of English readers. There will also be preview videos to further help teachers when selecting books, assessing how suitable the book is for students and the purpose of the class. What is more, in addition to the downloadable and printable Activity Tips and worksheets, the flashcard sets in the app are now printable from the new Teacher’s Dashboard.

bookr-class-english-teaching-app

Make your profile your own!

Now children are free to add their own personality to the app by choosing an avatar for themselves, selecting their interests and marking their favourite books as well. This not only adds a more personal touch, but also allows our system to recommend books that a student is more likely to be interested in based on their interests and level of English. Then again, the ultimate benefit here is motivating children to learn and read more.

interests_bookrclass

Last but not least: BO is here to make learning fun

Design plays an important role in the experience that children have while using an application – and has cognitive benefits as well. We have made BOOKR Class even brighter, more colourful and with a more dynamic, playful BO bunny who is there for children every step of the way: giving them feedback or navigating through the learning process.

Environmental Protection themed series in the BOOKR Class Library App https://bookrclass.com/blog/environmental-protection-series/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 08:23:52 +0000 https://bookrlab.com/bookrclass2021/?post_type=blog&p=994

What is environmental protection?

Conserving our environment means that we take care of everything around us. We protect animals, plants, forests, waters, the land and landscapes. We don’t allow them to get hurt, damaged or polluted.

Restoring our environment means that we understand something has gone wrong and we are trying to improve the situation. For example some species are declining in number, a body of water has become more polluted, or even that global warming can cause natural disasters threatening human lives.

Why is it important to talk about environmental issues at school?

We need to be aware of environmental changes so we can stop and even reverse them. Raising awareness of these issues is crucial even at a very young age. We are responsible for raising an environmentally-conscious generation who reduces waste, recycles, reuses things and even upcycles. For this, we need to teach our kids the value of nature, good health, responsible behaviour and critical thinking.

Without these skills and knowledge they might not address ethical issues such as pollution or wildlife conservation which can cause serious damage to mother nature and the human race. By taking small measures to protect the environment, we can encourage a conscious lifestyle and leave a legacy of a healthy planet on which future generations can live. Who wouldn’t like to take part in such an important initiative?

How to raise environmental awareness?

 • Lead by example – Most of the time children copy behaviour. If teachers or parents lead by example, children will make environmentally conscious behaviour part of their everyday life. For example recycling in the classroom or at home, picking up rubbish from the floor or turning off the lights when leaving the room.
 • School projects – Make it fun! Involving the whole school or families in projects like planting trees, picking up rubbish in the local forest can encourage environmentally-conscious habits.
 • Challenges – Use charts to show students their own progress. The chart can include mini quests such as turning off the lights, showering instead of taking a bath.

Bob’s Tales

Bob is a little dog who wants to be a detective when he grows up. One day, he smells something strange and decides to find out where the smell is coming from. In the story we follow Bob and his Dad, Tango, on their adventure. Even the Forest Police are involved! On their way to the crime scene they see that all forest plants and animals are being affected by illegal waste dumping. Will the team be able to uncover the identities of the criminals? Will they get their just deserts?

Activity tip – Domino

 • Ask the students to form groups.
 • Give each group a set of domino cards.
 • Ask them to shuffle the cards and place them face down.
 • Place the “start” card on the desk.
 • Then, the players draw a card one by one and match the introduction with the character’s picture.
 • The game is over when the “finish” card is on the desk as well.

To make this exercise easier, ask the students to use the ideas as clues, allocate time for a speaking session about the characters and their guesses. You can play it before reading the series. How well can they guess what the characters are like? During reading they can switch the cards if needed.
