Why are routines important in the classroom

Students like rules. They like routines and structure, as it’s easier to function in them. The trick is to strike a happy medium – give them enough freedom to express their creativity during activities but in an organized framework with boundaries. It’s quite a fun topic, actually. Let me show you why in this next blog post.

Routine is important because:

  • it helps them to understand what is expected of them.
  • problems that may occur can be handled more efficiently, routines reduce stress
  • routines can be a safe space for your students. When heavy emotions or difficult situations arise, they find comfort in the consistency of some of these activities.
  • rules and routines can be made exciting. A couple of techniques and some creativity will work wonders.
  • a well-thought-out routine becomes part of these kids' everyday life and may as well stay with them for a lifetime. You have the golden opportunity to enrich their personal lives outside their academic achievements. That is huge.

Class routines are going to be different in preschool, elementary school, and in high school. Depending on culture and age, students will react differently to certain routines; that’s why we gathered as many examples as we could. Find your favorite one!

But remember, no matter which ones you implement, rules and routines need to be consistent, predictable and clearly articulated to work.

Classroom routines examples

Let’s take a look at the different types of routines. We collected some of the best examples, tips, and printable activities for you to try.

Must haves - order in my classroom!

Effective classroom management tips are the backbone, so we start at the basics.

  • Set a timer for transitions

Transitions can be challenging for many young learners. It’s important to give students a clear idea of when you all will move on to the next activity and what that requires them to do. Setting a timer for transitions is a very tangible way to let them know we’re moving on to a new topic or activity. Songs work just as well: “By the time the music stops, everyone back in their seats with the book open at page 15”.

  • Assign a type of activity to each day of the week

It will add variety and predictability to schooldays and something to look forward to every day. Be creative here and include chores or tasks that need to be done – make it playful and see that even collecting trash in the classroom becomes fun.

classroom-routines-schedule

Some examples to spark your creativity:

Make me smile Monday – Read them a funny story, play a video, or tell a joke to start the week on the right foot.

Wish Jar Wednesday – Each Wednesday, each student writes down his/her favorite game or activity (you can give them ideas and examples to help them choose, especially the younger students). You put them all in a jar and keep them somewhere safe in the classroom. Each Wednesday, as a warm-up or cool-down activity, a student gets to pick one piece of paper out of the jar randomly.

Friday Wraps – What happened this week? Let’s wrap it up! You can even make it on a separate sheet of paper and have them decorate and roll it or fold it as if it was a wrap and the learnings are the ingredients for that week.

Classroom routines examples can really make a difference in maintaining order and engagement in the classroom.

  • Learning is fundamental!

Have students complete an exit ticket for something they learned that day.  It’s helpful to have a little time to reflect and see if they understood the concept or materials covered that day. Plus, it lets them leave with a feeling of accomplishment each and every day – how’s that for motivation?

Academics are not everything - develop essential social-emotional skills!

  • Acts of kindness

Assign one or two students each week to look for acts of kindness during the week. Have them report their observations to the class at the end of the day – it’s a wonderful way of practicing not only kindness put public speaking and presentation skills. If your students are of a more advanced level, this game can be in English.

  • Morning yoga

An active body activates the mind, too – of course, we’re not saying you need to become a gym teacher all of a sudden. Check out a couple of easy movements you can easily complete in the classroom and have the little ones release some stress and fatigue.

classroom routines morning yoga

It’s a great idea to try out when they feel tired or in between activities to free their minds and start fresh for the next challenge.

  • Greeting at the door

Daily routines start at the very first moment students enter your classroom – so why not start with the simple habit of paying a little bit of attention to all your students every day?

Decide with your learners if it’s a wave, a hug, or a high-five that suits them best.

Classroom routines examples help to set the tone for the entire learning environment.

  • Cultivate a healthy feedback culture

Teach the little ones about praising each other and give them a framework of a healthy feedback culture. Make it a habit to congratulate each other when something goes right, and not judge if a classmate makes a mistake.

A funny way to praise and learn English at the same time is by using Praising Cards.

If you’d like to read more about the importance of social-emotional learning at an early age and find out what it really means, check out our article about it written by psychologists and educational experts.

There are no two teachers and two classes that are the same – and that’s one of the reasons we love this profession so much. Depending on age group, nationality, number of students, and the group dynamic in general, you’ll find that something that works like a charm on one student or class does nothing for the other.

Try to enjoy the process of finding why routine is important in your classroom, in your particular case, and take the time to figure out what works best. And remember, you’re planting seeds today that could become part of a beautiful forest in the future, giving them techniques that might become part of their daily routines and even personality as an adult. That is pretty exciting on its own.

Easter Activities in Class or Beyond https://bookrclass.com/blog/easter-activities/ Mon, 22 Mar 2021 09:45:49 +0000 https://bookrlab.com/bookrclass2021/?post_type=blog&p=1035

Link surfing

Elementary and up

Link surfing is a fun online activity not only for your Easter classes. All your students need is a computer and a wikipedia page in front of them.

link surfing
  • Choose any page such as “Billie Eilish”, “COVID-19” or anything you’d like.
  • Then, choose an ending Wikipedia page. Such as “Easter” or “Easter bunny”, or anything Easter-themed.

The students’ task is to arrive at the Wikipedia page “Easter” only using the hyperlinks of the website. This challenges their cognitive skills, reading skills and how fast they can scan through a text.

Giving gifts

Beginner

Ask your beginners to decorate a paper egg. Using this paper egg have a fun Easter role play with this dialogue, for example:

giving gifts
  • This is a gift. Here you are.
  • Thank you. What is it?
  • It’s an egg.
  • What colour is it?
  • It’s green.

Here’s a tip to level up the previous activity for your intermediate students. Ask them to form pairs, and  think of a great present idea for their partners. Ask them to finish the sentence “If I were an Easter bunny, I would bring you a(n) X. Then to elaborate on why they’d bring a “pencil case” or “confidence” or an “alarm clock” for their partners.

Carnival Parade

Organise a fun parade for your students. Divide the class into groups, delegate them to an English-speaking country and ask them to colour their flag. Help them prepare for a parade, let them fly their flags and march across the classroom to the national anthem. Look at a world map together and have them place their flags on it. Also encourage them to create a poster or draw other pictures that symbolise their country.

Dedicate the end of the lesson to learn about some of the English-speaking countries. BOOKR Class has created a board game to help you and your students acquire information in an light-hearted interactive way. Divide the class into smaller groups of three or four students and distribute the board game, a deck of cards, a dice and figures. If necessary, go through the instructions on the fields.

Develop your students’ presentation and social skills with the help of civilisation presentations. Divide the class into groups of two or three students and distribute the names of English-speaking countries. Encourage them to create an exciting presentation of the country with fun facts and the most important symbols. Preparing notes and rehearsing the presentation together can boost their confidence.

Our Top 5 English Activities for Christmas https://bookrclass.com/blog/english-activities-for-christmas/ Tue, 08 Dec 2020 10:23:06 +0000 https://bookrlab.com/bookrclass2021/?post_type=blog&p=1473

In this part of the BOOKR’s Recommendation series we would like to introduce you to our top 5 Christmas activities which are ready to use in class. Whether you use these tips to teach in the classroom or online, they can be a fun part of Christmas preparations while also learning about culture which is part of the ESL curriculum.

ESL activities for Christmas

  • 1. “I spy with my little eye”

This classic game is frequently used in ESL teaching and learning. The teacher chooses a Christmas related object from the classroom – or in case of online lessons from a picture full of different festive objects – and describes it. Learners attempt to guess the object. It can be introduced as a frontal activity but learners can play it in pairs too.

If you decide to read our book ‘Christmas Surprise’ on Level 1 in the BOOKR Class application with your learners, you can use the newly learnt adjectives from the book (warm, hot, big, small, hard, soft, fluffy).

  • 2. Christmas Songs Spiced Up

We’re sure that learners can never get bored of Christmas songs in your ESL lessons, especially when a little game is involved. Use this activity when you have the chance to sing about 5-6 songs together. You can include these short games in the beginning or at the end of the lesson as a cool down.

  • The teacher/a student hums the tune and the learners guess which song it is.
  • The teacher/a student taps the rhythm and the learners guess which song it is.
  • The teacher/a student mimes or draws the song.
  • 3. Gift Hunt

With this game you can definitely spice up your ESL classes. Hide tiny objects in tiny matchboxes in the classroom. The matchboxes can contain anything festive you’d like: a bit of cinnamon, a few beads, a piece of gingerbread, or a Christmas candy.

First, ask the learners to find all of these boxes, then stand in a circle, ask them to shake and/or smell the boxes and have them guess what’s inside. This task will improve their cognitive skills.

  • 4. Secret Santa

To make the Christmas preparations more exciting, you can organize a secret Santa drawing in the class. Write your students’ names on pieces of paper and put them in a hat and let the students pick.

Ask them to create crafty Christmas presents for whoever they picked or you can also make them together during the lesson. Before exchanging gifts, learners can act out or describe the person they are going to give their present to.

  • 5. Christmas Decorations

Use our printable festive ornaments which can be downloaded from here.

Give each learner an ornament to paint or to colour. While they are working, prepare a huge Christmas tree from paper. When the learners are finished, they can glue their ornaments on the big tree. You can also continue the task by having each learner describe what their ornament looks like and the others can guess what it is.

  • +1 Christmas Surprise – A book from the BOOKR Class app

Christmas Surprise offers cultural content; it’s a really cozy Christmas story where everyone is trying to figure out what kind of gift they got based on the packaging. The story introduces an ideal Christmas morning and Christmas traditions: giving and opening presents, spending quality time together and playing.

To enhance the experience, use our festive word search and vocabulary learning worksheet, which can be downloaded from here.

How To Teach English Online – 5+5 Tips for your digitalized classroom https://bookrclass.com/blog/how-to-teach-english-online-55-tips-for-your-digitalized-classroom/ Mon, 07 Dec 2020 11:20:24 +0000 https://bookrlab.com/bookrclass2021/?post_type=blog&p=1495

Getting started online - advice on planning

  • 1. Schedule Fixed Lessons

Make a clear schedule and plan the sessions.

Be consistent with the day, time and duration of the sessions – students are still learning time management skills, so provide them with arranged meetings at the same time every week and let them schedule some of their work themselves.

  • 2. Be Reasonable About the Content

Sitting in front of the screen isn’t engaging enough for some students: their attention span becomes shorter and they lose focus more easily.

Therefore, when planning a lesson, be considerate and try not to cram too much into a lesson.

Your lesson might be a bit shorter than usual, but quality should always come before quantity.

  • 3. Include a Variety of Activities

Try to find a balance between teacher time and student time, and encourage them to work. If possible, vary the types of activities too.

Try to alter what students see on the screen: show yourself, share the screen, provide them with a wider variety of impulses.

If you can, involve some movement or gestures in the lesson and assign exercises that don’t require the use of technology.

  • 4. Be Flexible and Helpful

Stay flexible when it comes to homework or projects.

Negotiate for deadlines and for the ways they can hand in their work.

Let them contact you if they have questions and give feedback more often than at school.

  • 5. Learn from the Feedback

From time to time, ask for feedback from your students. What are their experiences of your online lessons?

What could be changed to engage them more effectively? What activities work well and motivate a particular group?

Reflect on their feedback and the lesson itself and improve your teaching efficiently.

Classroom management ideas - advice on organization

  • 1. Make It Personal

Never forget to inquire about your students’ mental health before starting a lesson: check their attendance, the quality of the call but also their well-being. How do they feel?

Ask personal questions, show yourself on their screen if you can. Enable them to feel that you are present and they are active, valuable members of the lesson.

  • 2. Try Different Group Formations

Don’t be afraid of experimenting with different group formation techniques.

Many of us start off with frontal lessons when teaching online, but students might benefit more from pairwork and small group discussions in certain situations, especially when teaching English.

  • 3. Spend Quality Time with Students

Divide your class into smaller groups or into pairs and work with them without the rest of the class – sometimes less is more – their sessions might be shorter this way but they will have a greater responsibility to be active and willing to communicate with each other. .

  • 4. Let Your Students Chat to Learn

When students work in pairs, you can ask them to take a screenshot of their pairwork.

Most of the dialogues can become lifelike discussions, such as arranging to meet or putting together a shopping list.

  • 5. Encourage Creative Individual Projects

If you’d like to encourage your students to work individually on a topic, you can ask them to create a cheat sheet of the material.

They need to go through the text, understand and interpret it, highlight the most important information, rearrange the ideas and find correlations. A cheat sheet can have many formats: one pager, a poster, a collage, a flowchart or a lapbook, among others.

  • +1 Use Our Teaching Tool – The BOOKR Class App

To keep the teaching process more interesting, we suggest the use of our wonderful ebook library application which contains books for K-12. With its reading materials and various skill development tasks and flashcard sets it’s perfect for classroom – as well as individual – use. The students can receive an access code of their own,  which allows them touse the application at home on their tablets, too.

After reading a book and solving the exercises students can receive badges, which helps maintain their motivation.

As students have their own access code, our teachers can see the status and result of each task, whether the solution is correct, in progress, wrong or the task was never started. Teachers can also see the amount of time the students spent with each book.

To make giving online homework easier, books and exercises can be assigned to the students which will appear in their application on a separate shelf.

As we strive to make online teaching easier for our beloved educators, we have prepared a bunch of worksheets and documents containing activity tips which can be used in different work formations including group work, pair work, individual work and projects as well. They can be downloaded from the Teacher’s Dashboard or from our website’s portfolio page.

To facilitate the preparation for online English lessons, we’ve created the BOOKR Class desktop app for you. Besides assigning books to students individually through the downloaded app on their phones, and besides the teachers’ dashboard where you can monitor progress, now, you can work together with students in class in a more convenient and efficient way. With BOOKR Class Desktop you can access all books and games just like in the mobile app. Share your screen and enjoy our books and games with all of the learners at the same time.

In order to use the BOOKR Class desktop app, follow these steps:

BOOKR’s Recommendation: Tips for Thanksgiving https://bookrclass.com/blog/tips-for-thanksgiving/ Fri, 13 Nov 2020 11:28:08 +0000 https://bookrlab.com/bookrclass2021/?post_type=blog&p=1504

The legend says that Thanksgiving originates in 1620, when the pilgrims left England on a ship called the Mayflower to start a new life in America. It took them more than two difficult months to arrive and unfortunately, the journey was followed by a harsh winter when more than half of the pilgrims died of hunger.

Luckily, spring came and the pilgrims met the native tribes who taught them how to plant crops and how to hunt better. In 1621 they had a harvest like never before and by autumn all the pilgrims had enough to eat.

tanksgiving dinner

1. Thanksgiving Dinner

Ask the learners to sit in a circle. Give each learner a name: turkey, potato or pie. When the teacher calls “turkey”, all the students with this name stand up and switch places while the teacher sits down on one of the empty chairs.

The learner who doesn’t have a place calls the next name. It’s also possible to call “Thanksgiving dinner”, in which case all the learners stand up and switch places.

tips for thanksgiving

They were thankful for all the food so they invited their Native American friends to a feast. According to the legend, this was the very first Thanksgiving dinner in history.

How to celebrate Thanksgiving with your learners? Here are some tips to help you:

2. The Feast

Ask the learners to sit in a circle. Start the game with a sentence like this: “I’m bringing turkey”. The next learner’s task is to repeat the first food and to add another one: “I’m bringing turkey and potatoes”.

the feast

The game ends when everyone has something to bring for dinner.

3. Thanksgiving Reading Comprehension

Use our introductory paragraph about Thanksgiving as a reading activity. Divide your class into groups and ask them to write questions about the text. Next, pair up the students who have different questions and let them check each other’s reading comprehension by answering each other’s questions.

If you’d prefer to improve your learners’ language accuracy, copy our text and delete some words thus creating a gap-fill exercise. It’s up to you!
